First Light Awards Winner 2012 – Best Drama

Broken Sleep is an experimental short film made by young people in care that live in the North Lincolnshire area. The group devised, shot and starred in the film with guidance from workshop leaders from Shooting Fish Theatre Company and Blueprint: Film Foundation. The aim was to give these young people, who are from extremely difficult backgrounds, a chance to develop their self confidence and build other important interpersonal, literacy, drama and filmmaking skills.
As well as winning a First Light Award for Best Drama, the film was shown at the Cannes Film Festival 2012 in the Short Film Corner.
The film was produced by Shooting Fish for First Light which is a filmmaking initiative for young people, funded by the BFI and the National Lottery.
